A. N. Basu is Chairman, West Bengal Pollution Control Board.
He is also Member, State Planning Board of Government of West
Bengal. He was Vice Chancellor of Jadavpur University for
8 years, 1998-2006.
Born in 1943, Prof. Basu graduated with Physics Honours from
the Presidency College, Kolkata, subsequently did his Master
of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Physics from the Calcutta
University.
He has published about one hundred papers in different national
and international scientific journals and has lectured in
many conferences and seminars. He has worked in different
areas of Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science including
Phonon Physics, Amorphous materials at low temperature, Semicrystalline
polymers, and Disorder and Non-Linearity. His recent contributions
and interest are in the areas of High Temperature Superconductors,
Low temperature (liquid nitrogen) instrumentation, Organic
electronics and organic photodetectors and Foundational problems
in quantum mechanics.
He is also member of different learned societies including
the Indian Physical Society and Material Research Society
of India and others.
Of the many distinctions earned by Jadavpur University during
his tenure as Vice Chancellor, the University Grants Commission’s
identification of the University as a centre of excellence
– one of the first five Universities in the country
with ‘Potential for excellence’ stands most prominently.
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council accorded
the highest grading and accredited the University with a ‘Five
Star’ status.
